This week my class was tasked with our first music research assignment. We got into groups and were assigned music genres. My group got the subgenres of rock, witch would include indie rock, punk rock, alternative rock, blues rock, hard rock and many more. Individually we had to pick a record company and two bands or artists that produced our genre of music. I chose RCA records for my record company then Sleep Token and Cage the Elephant for my two case studies.
I started my research by going to the RCA records website, it had a "How we started" page and I read that first before going onto other websites and researching it more. I then went to the websites for Sleep Token and Cage the Elephant to see some of the things they thought were most important for their brands, and I found that both had links to merch and links to places fans could listen to their music online. After that I decided to go to some fan made accounts and read what they had to say about the albums, or watch videos about some inside jokes within the fandom to get a feel for the target audience. I watched and read many interviews, especially for Cage the Elephant. Sleep Token doesn't do as many interviews as other bands, but that is part of its brand and adds to the mystery of it. I then went on the bands official social media to see what they were posting, where, and why. I noticed that Sleep Token was again being very mysterious, while Cage the Elephant posted a lot at their concerts, connecting with fans who had seen or would want to see them in person. Finally, I just listened to their music so I could match how they're marketing style relates to the songs they release.
